In recovery from addiction, you are likely to come across the phrase digging yourself out of a hole. Perhaps you hit rock bottom, or you have hit it before, but you are helping others out of theirs. Maybe you have dug yourself a hole you cannot see your way out of and you are struggling to breathe. If you are in a hole, dug yourself a hole before, or may dig yourself a hole again (welcome to life) then these tips may help you. It is always better to pre-empt the situation than to try to dig out of it after.
When things go wrong and you find yourself going down into a hole, the first thing you should do it stop. Stop digging. Look around long enough to figure out what just happened. Stop and look around objectively at the situation. You may wonder if it is dark or have a damp smell. You may wonder if you know you’ve been here before and how to get out. You may have become good at convincing yourself that rather than digging a hole, you’re building a ladder. Even if you do know the difference, sometimes you find yourself still in that hole. Learning to stop digging is important. If you keep digging, you’ll hit bottom, then all you have is to look up. Before you get there, it helps to notice you’re even there in the first place. When you do, try this:
- Call a loved one
- Seek professional help
- Get treatment
Recovery is not a bad thing. In fact, it will help you get where you want to go and achieve those goals you’ve been wanting to achieve. If you keep digging, you’ll hit bottom every time. In fact, you might hit new bottoms until you’re finally so far down, you’ve no idea how you got there but have no choice but to go up. Try to stop digging and get help before then.
Don’t Talk Yourself Out of It
You probably have stopped long enough to recognize you’re in a hole at this point. The next step is to realize, if you are like most people, you are not necessarily in a hole. People can tell you that but only you know. Over time, you likely have adjusted to the whole idea of being in a hole and don’t even see it for what it is at this point. Calling a hole a hole is the first step getting out. A circular trench doesn’t sound so bad. It is really a hole, no matter what you call it. Everyone gets into a hole at some point. That is no excuse for not digging yourself out. If you are in a hole, don’t deny it. Admit you’re in it, you’re over your head, and you need to get yourself out before you are too far down.
