With an epidemic ravaging the country by killing 40 Americans everyday, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released new guidelines directing doctors to simply refrain from prescribing opioids. But if a new drug and study gains ground the health agency might make a change in their guidelines.
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences have released a report showing an opioid drug called BU08028 has alleviated pain in a dozen monkeys with the same capabilities as other opioid painkillers, such as Vicodin and Oxycontin. But, unlike Vicodin and other pain killers, BU08028 showed zero signs of being addictive. Even when given a high dose – where other pain killers inhibit the respiratory and cardiovascular system, BU08028 was harmless.
Now, we at The Last Resort have our doubts just as you probably do reading this information and we will always believe in abstinence based recovery, but this might be a step in the right direction for the medical community.
