Addiction treatment makes people wonder what they are in for when they arrive. Even if they have gone before, every place is different. A day in rehab is not like any other for every individual. There are some basics to know that can help prepare. Both inpatient and outpatient treatment centers offer different things, but the goal is to minimize anxiety and stress, bring structure, and offer a place of peace to rest during a difficult transition to recovery.
Meet the Morning
Not every morning is a person’s best friend in addiction recovery. Perhaps mornings were the time when drugs and alcohol and worn off, the hangover, headaches, chills, or other signs of withdrawal crept up and felt difficult to manage for the day ahead. Perhaps mornings felt full of energy and great, but maybe they were also challenging. The best way to start the day in recovery is to eat a healthy breakfast. Building new, healthy habits, is part of the journey of building a positive routine for the journey of recovery. Following breakfast, most rehab centers will offer the following:
- Group session by counselors or therapists
- Individual sessions to discuss personal issues
- Creating space in a safe environment to look at patterns of behavior that need to change or triggers to avoid post-treatment
The middle of the day is often when the most intense treatments are offered. Followed by lunch, treatments can include a mix of the following:
- Individual therapy like CBT that hones behavioral responses to triggers. Sessions provide a safe space to open up and share what is going on, which allows the therapist to provide tools and alternative responses to behavioral issues that may cause anxiety (procrastination, communication, etc)
- Group therapy: it may seem like there are groups for everything, but it is a healthy way to build community while in rehab and share those struggles with others. It is helpful to share personal stories, develop a sense of fellowship, and grow trust that builds understanding
- Tailored sessions: these are unique to each person, centering around specialized therapy including stress management, grief counseling, coping skills, and other things that can help a person navigate recovery better
- Family therapy: a very important part of treatment is developing a connection to family. Addiction impacts everyone, resulting in codependency and enabling behaviors. During family therapy, these issues are resolved and feelings are addressed. Family participation factors into how the person will be supported after they leave rehab
Rest and Relaxation
Some of the other types of rehab experiences a person may have are equine therapy, exercise, and other activities that help them surrender to the process. During free time, a person can explore some of these, go swimming (if available), play ping pon, and journal. Once the evening comes, there is generally dinner, a short group session, and time to rest before bed. Bedtimes are imposed to help ensure everyone gets enough rest and is ready to start the next day fresh. Rehab is not what everyone expects it to be, but it can be as good as people make it out to be, depending on how they decide to pursue it while in rehab. Giving into the experience is more beneficial than fighting it, but sometimes it takes a while to adjust to the routine and accept this new reality in the moment and what is to come down the road.
