How Trauma/PTSD Are Related to Addiction
Trauma is a common issue that coincides with addiction, and often is what underlies other co-occurring issues such as depression, anxiety, self-defeating relationships, and relapse amongst people struggling with addiction. Neuroscience has validated much of what addiction professionals have suspected for years about how addiction and trauma affect various parts of the brain, and just how complex the interaction of the two can be. With this in mind, it is easy to see how long-term recovery might be difficult if not impossible without healing from trauma.
Traditional talk therapies alone are not enough to help people heal from trauma-related disorders, including PTSD. The Last Resort Recovery specializes in treating trauma and addiction with experiential modalities, action-based therapies, mindfulness practices, body-mind connection therapies, and EMDR.
Since Neuroscience teaches us that we can change our brain with new experiences and new relationships, our Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy is focused on creating the kind of relationships that heal and transform. Learn more about how our Equine program helps men heal from trauma-related disorders including PTSD and addiction on our Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy page.
The Brave Heart Experience is an intensive 2-day workshop that helps teach trauma resolution and allows men to build emotional intelligence. Through this experiential process, our clients are able to find passion, depth, and a solid foundation for recovery.
Men who go through The Brave Heart Experience can reap the following benefits:
- Heal wounds that are deep-seated
- Learn to speak comfortably from a place of emotion
- Find a better understanding of themselves
- Improve their communication skills
- Develop strong leadership skills
- Identify a mission or passion in life
EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are a result of disturbing life experiences, which cause trauma-related disorders including PTSD. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can quickly experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference with talk therapy alone. The Last Resort Recovery utilizes EMDR therapy with men when it is appropriate to aid in their healing process.
