Trauma & PTSD Treatment at The Last Resort
Men who have been traumatized are more likely to develop a substance use disorder. At The Last Resort, we empower you to unpack your past, confront your trauma, and live a life free from addiction.
The Link Between Trauma, PTSD, and Addiction
Trauma happens when you feel that your life is threatened, and it affects everyone differently. Many men are traumatized by events in childhood, acts of violence, ongoing abuse, military deployment, prolonged illness, or sudden injury. Natural disasters and car accidents are also common causes of trauma in Texas.
Some traumatic events may catalyze post-traumatic stress disorder, better known as PTSD. Signs of PTSD include:
- Constantly being alert or on guard
- Struggling to fall asleep and stay asleep
- Recurring nightmares about the incident
- Experiencing flashbacks even while awake
- Irritability, anxiety, and impaired concentration
- Isolating from others who don’t understand
- Avoiding reminders of what happened
- Drinking or using drugs to cope with symptoms
This last symptom is one we see often at The Last Resort. Coping with a traumatic event is incredibly difficult, especially if you try to do it on your own. Many men turn to drinking or drug use to alleviate anxiety, forget about the event, or get some sleep. However, this can have severe consequences. Men who cope through substance abuse are prone to physical, mental, legal, financial, relational, and spiritual problems. Fortunately, help is available.
