Why Kindness Matters and How to Cultivate it

Giving back to others is a great kind of medicine. Generosity is a trait that is needed to cultivate kindness. It matters because it is something that helps everyone see the world a little differently, in a positive light, and helps build momentum for the journey of recovery. The foundation of recovery is built on giving back to others. This is actually the 12th step in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. They suggest you give back what had freely been given to you. It cultivates a new sense of purpose for those in recovery.

It Brings Happiness

It may have felt good to make a person smile, or try performing a simple act of kindness, and turn a bad day into a good one. Completion of being generous leads to significantly more positive moods. Happiness spreads through every person and to those around us when we are cultivating it. Taking the time to help others is never in vain. They may only gain a little bit, but the giver also receives a lot of joy in kind. We connect to people through kindness. Being kind is a huge step in real human connection, which can be vitally important in the recovery process.

Healthy Living

Stress, worries, and fear can contribute to aging. Kindness decelerates the process. A simple act of kindness can dissolve the worry so people can feel the momentum of hope come alive. Spreading kindness decreases anxiety in social situations. When we are kind, a hormone called oxytocin kicks in. This chemical dilutes blood cells and shrinks inflammation in the cardiovascular system. This reduces blood pressure and the chances of heart disease. Being kind can have a positive impact on your health and your recovery!

Hope Springs

Giving back to those in need not only make them feel better, but it provides a glimmer of hope. The world is a difficult place for many people and the greatest thing another human being can do is support someone who is alone, or provide some kindness. One small act of compassion can make a huge difference in a person’s life. The kindness of others that reinstill faith can bring hope to entire communities. When people doubt that just a little bit of kindness goes a long way, it helps to realize all you have to do is step outside and you will see someone in need. Perhaps it is an animal, perhaps a human being, but whomever it is, helping them will never be in vain. There will always be something healing about the power of helping someone through a difficult time or supporting them in making a good choice about their path. Be the kind of person who gives to others and offers kindness because it can never be for nothing if you do something nice for someone else.
